Cradle Mountain itself is a great place to start, with the classic view from Dove Lake among Tasmania’s most iconic. The Dove Lake circuit is one of Tasmania’s 60 Great Short Walks and offers great views of the mountain and the lake. Other short walks reveal different rewards, from the 10min Rainforest Walk to Pencil Pine Falls, to the Weindorfers Forest Walk among ancient King Billy pines and pandani, and the Enchanted Walk which follows a mossy creek through cool rainforest. Wildlife sightings are common, particularly wombats. For a guaranteed encounter with Tasmanian devils, visit Devils@Cradle.

There are several accommodation options at Cradle Mountain and nearby that offer spa baths, particularly among luxury and cabin-style stays. Among these include Discovery Resorts – Cradle Mountain, Eagles Nest Retreat, Cradle Mountain Lodge and Cradle Mountain Hotel.

Discovery Resorts – Cradle Mountain and Cradle Highlander are within a 10min walk of the Cradle Mountain Visitor Centre. Cradle Mountain Lodge and Cradle Mountain Hotel are slightly further away, around a 5min drive.

During the peak booking season (1 October to 31 May), the Overland Track is walked north to south only, starting at Cradle Mountain (north) and finishing at Lake St Clair (south). Many people choose to park at Lake St Clair (their finishing point) and take a bus to Cradle Mountain to begin the hike. Lake St Clair has accommodation and dining options that are a well-earned reward at the end of the walk.
